About Durga Puja

Durga Puja is one of the biggest celebrations in India, especially in the Eastern Parts of India.

The multi-day celebration honours the victory of Hindu Goddess Durga over the asura, Mahishasura and denotes the victory of 'Good over Evil'.

Celebrated as far back as the 14th century, it has assumed enormous cultural, social and religious significance, and the 10-day festival is celebrated with much fervour and enthusiasm. The celebrations primarily begin on day 6 (Sashti) with the welcome of the Goddess and extend up to the 10th Day (Vijaya Dashami) when the idols are immersed in a river, signifying the end of the festival.

As of December 2021, UNESCO has inscribed Kolkata's Durga Puja on its 'Intangible Cultural Heritage' (ICH) list.
